Cricket Tasmania selectors have announced the Cripps Tasmanian Roar squad to participate in the first WNCL T20 & WNCL One-Day matches of the season this week at the Allan Border Field in Brisbane.
The Roar, playing in their second official season in the full competition, will take on the Queensland Fire in two WNCL T20 matches on Friday October 21 and Sunday October 23 and a WNCL One-Day fixture on Saturday October 22.
Cripps Tasmanian Roar Coach Jade Selby said despite the side being young in age and relatively inexperienced he expects the side to build on last year’s efforts and progress as the season unfolds.
“With all players entering their second or third year we are looking to be really competitive in both forms of the game this season,” Selby said.
Last season the Roar had mixed results against Queensland, winning one of the two T20 matches and going down in the One-Day fixture.
“Winning against Queensland last year will definitely give us some confidence but they have a couple of experienced players returning this year which will provide a tough challenge for us,” Selby said.
The Roar had a solid pre-season hit out in Sydney last month against the reigning WNCL Champions the NSW Breakers and despite not coming away with a win Selby said his side got a lot out of the tour, especially being able to bat out 50 overs against some of the best female cricketers in the country.
“One of our team goals was to be able to bat out the 50 overs, which is something we weren’t able to achieve last year so to achieve this was fantastic.
“Now that we have achieved this goal, we need to consistently set our standards high and maintain them throughout the season for further success,” Selby said.
