Our State U19’s have returned home from a successful series of practice matches against New South Wales in Greater Western Sydney this week with the side showing much promise ahead of their national championships later in the summer.
The first 50-overs match saw Tasmania easily account for the Blues after a great bowling display dismantled the NSW line-up, knocking them over for 66 in under 25 overs. Josh Andree and Harry Allanby were the pick of the bowlers with 3 wickets each. In reply Tasmania batted out their overs and reached 6-167 with Beau Webster top scoring with 50 and Michael Jones 30.
The second match saw the team travel down to Bankstown and yet again put on an impressive display. Some fine batting by Mitchell Backhorse (65) and Sean Williss (32) ensured a steady total of 170. In a rain-affected match, Tasmania was victorious on the Duckworth-Lewis system.
Game three saw a change in format in the shorter form of the game with two T20 games in one day.
In the first match of the day the Tasmanians restricted the Blues to 7-114 with Josh Andree, Harry Allanby and Alex Treanor the best of the bowlers. In the reply, Tasmania reached the total losing 6 wickets with Sean Willis top scoring with 52.
In between games, some team members were also lucky enough to catch up with Australian captain Michael Clarke and get some tips before hitting off again in the afternoon.
The final T20 match was a nail biter with NSW victorious in the last over of the day. Tasmania posted a competitive total of 118 with Beau Webster (27) and Trent Keep (25) the best with the bat. Despite some good bowling from Michael Lukic, the Blues were able to scrape through and reach the Tasmanian target in the final over of the day.
Coach of the U19’s Richard Allanby said he was happy with the way his side had performed in their four matches and paid special mention to Sean Williss who had some consistent performances with the bat and Alex Treanor and Michael Lukic who performed well with the ball.
