A heavy-hitting left-hander who enjoys blasting sixes, Birt secured a reputation for brutal strokeplay when he posted 145 against South Australia in 2004-05, the highest score in Tasmania's one-day history. A former Cricket Academy and Australia Under-19 player who relocated from country Victoria, Birt again headed to Derbyshire in 2007 to work further on his game. Birt was the stand-out player finishing on 195 not-out off 149 balls in a Tigers pre-season practice match against New Zealand and finished the 2007-08 season perfectly by making an unbeaten run-a-ball 37 in a nail biting finish to the Ford Ranger Cup final. After spending some of the off-season in Thailand with fellow teammates he is currently recovering well from hip surgery.
