Kingborough and Clarence will meet in a final for the second time this season when they battle it out for the Kookaburra Cup at Kingston Twin Ovals on Sunday February 12.

The two teams qualified for the final by accounting for Greater Northern Cup finalists Devonport and Riverside in one sided Semi Finals played at Kingston and Riverside on Sunday.

After finishing on top of the One Day ladder for the CTPL Competition, Kingborough hosted second placed Greater Northern qualifier Devonport who won the toss and elected to bat first.

The visiting team soon found this difficult with PKF Tasmanian Tigers quick Jackson Bird proving too good for the Orions’ top order, as the Knights got themselves four early wickets, including quick Chris Eliott taking a spectacular catch to dismiss Devonport skipper Brent Mullett.

Miles Barnard then showed some of the form that has him averaging 39 in CNW First Grade this season, top scoring for Devonport with 29, as wickets fell around him at regular intervals. Number seven Scott Mitchell and number eight Bruce Will were the only other two Orions reaching double figures as Bird proved he is a class above taking 4-14 from his nine overs as Devonport were bowled out for just 101 in the 36th over.

Leg spinner turned opening batsman Jason Shelton then backed up his maiden First Grade century from the day before, anchoring the run chase with 61 before becoming Mitchell’s second victim of the innings, after also dismissing Shelton’s opening partner Mitch Backhouse for seven.

Stand in captain Ashton May stepped up to ensure there were no more hiccups along the way, making 28 not out as the Knights reached their target in 23 overs to ensure they host the 2011/12 Kookaburra Cup Grand Final.

At Windsor Park Greater Northern Cup winners Riverside hosted CTPL pace setters and second on the CTPL One Day ladder Clarence who made full use of good batting conditions early through openers Scott Kremerskothen and Jon Wells.

Kremerskothen destroyed the Riverside bowling attack early, crunching ten boundaries on his way to 48 from just 39 deliveries as Wells went about his business at the other end.

Anchoring the innings with 79, Wells was ably supported by captain Shannon Tubb (38) and veteran Ben Harris (25) before a run over single figure scores in the lower order saw the visitors bowled out off the final ball of the innings for 266.

Tom Garwood was the pick of the bowlers for Riverside with 3-18 from six overs, with Aaron Campbell (2-58 from 9) the only other multiple wicket taker.

Lee Dixon and Patrick Mackrell set about chasing down the runs for Riverside after losing opener Matthew Shipp early and were looking comfortable against the Roos’ bowling line up, before Daniel Meredith spoiled the party, removing them for 22 and 24 respectively.

When Wells was introduced into the attacked as the fifth bowler used, things ended quickly for the home side, as they were bowled out for just 111 to ensure the Kookaburra Cup Semi Final was an all southern affair.

Wells finished with the pleasant looking figures of 4-8 from 5.4 overs taking the last four wickets of the match to end Riverside’s innings in the 34th over.

The Kookaburra Cup Grand Final will start at 11am on Sunday February 12 at Kingston Twin Ovals in a replay of the CTPL Twenty20 Grand Final match up.
