Tasmania's last-ditch effort to claim a spot in the Sheffield Shield final has ended in dismay as New South Wales ripped through the Tiger tail to seal a comfortable outright win at Bellerive Oval.
Set an improbable 430 runs to win, the Tigers went to lunch at 3-108 but then lost seven wickets for 106 runs after the interval to finish all out for 214, Mitchell Starc the chief destroyer with 4-51.
Blues keeper Peter Neville took six catches in the innings while Steven Smith was named man of the match for a solid all-round performance.
For the Tigers George Bailey made a rapid-fire 48 off 59 while James Faulkner smashed eight boundaries and a six in his 59.
The loss means the Tigers' faint chance of moving into second spot with an outright win has now gone, while the Blues were out of contention earlier in the match after Queensland clinched first innings points against South Australia at the Gabba.
The wickets fell at regular intervals after lunch as Tasmania sought to throw the bat at everything in the off-chance it could pull off a miracle.
First to go was Bailey caught at first slip by Be Rohrer off the bowling of Trent Copeland (2-45) then Dan Marsh was run out for 26.
Smith and Starc then captured the next four wickets as the Tigers lost 4-15 and were all out for 214.
Earlier, the Tiger openers got off to a brisk start to the morning with Rhett Lockyear swinging lustily at everything outside off stump.
Copeland was the first to strike for the Blues removing Ed Cowan (21) when he nicked one through to 'keeper Nevill .
Cowan was soon joined in the pavilion by Lockyear (5) when he attempted to pull a Stuart Clark (1-37) delivery only to feather a catch to Neville.
Despite the double breakthrough, the Tigers continued to chase quick runs with the skipper Bailey looking in fine touch, smashing eight boundaries in an inspired stay at the crease.
But the Tiger tilt was dealt a major blow when Alex Doolen gave Nevill his third catch of the innings off the bowling of Mitchell Starc.
The rot then set in for the home side as the Blues ran riot to wrap up the points in emphatic fashion.
